Haití, 1962. Un hombre joven es enterrado en el cementerio, pero años más tarde vuelve a la vida y es enviado a trabajar a los campos de caña de azúcar junto con otros zombis. El hombre se llama Clairvius Narcisse y, aunque su historia es materia de leyenda, su existencia es real. El catalizador de la zombificación de Clairvius es la tetrodotoxina, el veneno paralizador que se encuentra en el pez globo y que se incorpora a los rituales vudú.

Pero volvamos al tiempo presente, a un colegio privado femenino en Francia, donde Melissa es una anomalía racial y comportamental. Viene de Haití, donde sus dos progenitores murieron en el gran terremoto de 2010. Melissa no parece pertenecer a ese mundo. La fascinación que despierta en su amiga Fanny no presagia nada bueno, sobre todo cuando esta decide convocar fuerzas que no domina.

Bertrand Bonello ya nos tiene acostumbrados a empujar los límites y ahora ha creado una fantasía de venganza donde las semillas del colonialismo francés dan frutos amargos en el futuro. Sin embargo, Zombi Child no es exactamente una película de terror: lo que Bonello quiere provocar es que la historia muy real de dominación de unas civilizaciones sobre otras deje de causar horror y empiece a provocar una perdurable vergüenza.

But let's go back to the present, to a private all-girls school in France, where Melissa is a racial and behavioral anomaly. She comes from Haiti, where both her parents died in the massive earthquake of 2010. Melissa does not belong in this world. The fascination she awakens in her friend Fanny does not bode well, especially when she decides to call upon forces over which she has no control.

Bertrand Bonello has gotten us used to pushing the boundaries and has now created a revenge fantasy where the seeds of French colonialism bear bitter fruits in the future. However, Zombi Child is not quite a horror film: what Bonello wants is for the very real history of domination of some civilizations over others to stop causing horror and start causing lasting shame.

He is a filmmaker, scriptwriter, songwriter and author who lives between Paris and Montreal and has one of the most interesting and personal filmographies in the current French scene. The Pornographer earned him the FIPRESCI Prize at the 2001 Cannes Festival and Tiresia was nominated in 2003 . On War (2008), House of Tolerance (2011), Saint Laurent (2014) and Nocturama (2016) are some of his other films.
