Cristi es policía y a la vez soplón de la mafia. Desde Rumanía viaja a la isla de La Gomera (en las Islas Canarias) para aprender el silbido gomero. En Rumanía se encuentra bajo vigilancia policial, y utilizando la ancestral forma de comunicación canaria pretende comunicarse con la mafia para conseguir sacar de la cárcel a Zsolt, el único que sabe dónde están escondidos 30 millones de euros.

Ambientada entre la sombría Bucarest y la luminosa isla canaria que le da título, la última película del reconocido cineasta rumano Corneliu Porumboiu se sirve de todos los estereotipos del cine negro —el policía corrupto, la banda de gangsters e incluso la mujer fatal—, para crear un mosaico audiovisual que incluye referencias a cineastas como John Ford o Alfred Hitchcock (y a películas como Gilda o La dama de Shanghái ), una banda sonora ecléctica y potente, una variedad de personajes a cual más siniestro, sospechoso y estrambótico, y, en el centro de todo ello, un lenguaje silbado practicado por los habitantes de La Gomera para comunicarse a través de los barrancos. La estructura argumental no se distingue mucho de la de cualquier film de suspenso de serie B, pero la libertad narrativa, los giros constantes, el ingenioso sentido del humor y los cambios de registro convierten a La Gomera en una de las películas más subversivas, libres e inclasificables de los últimos años. Cristi is a police inspector and an informant for the mafia. From Romania, he travels to the island of La Gomera (in the Canary Islands) to learn the silbido gomero (Gomeran whistle). In Romania, he is under police surveillance and, using the age-old communication method of the Canary Islands, he intends to get in touch with the mafia to bail Zsolt out of jail, the only one who knows where 30 million euros are hidden.

Set in both gloomy Bucharest and the radiant Canary Island of La Gomera, the latest film by renowned Romanian filmmaker Corneliu Porumboiu is inspired by every film noir stereotype in the book—the dirty cop, the gangsters, even the femme fatal— to create an audiovisual mosaic that includes references to filmmakers such as John Ford or Alfred Hitchcock (and films such as Gilda or The Lady from Shanghai ), an eclectic and powerful soundtrack, a variety of increasingly sinister, suspicious and outlandish characters and, at the epicenter of it all, a whistled language used by the inhabitants of La Gomera to communicate through ravines. The plot is not so different from any suspense B movie but the narrative freedom, the constant plot twists, the clever sense of humor and the changes in tone make The Whistlers one of the most subversive, free and impossible to classify films of the last few years. A brilliant, incisive and extremely fun cinematic puzzle.

Tras graduarse con el corto Calatorie la oras (premiado en la sección Cinéfondation del Festival de Cannes), funda junto a Marcela Ursu la productora 42Km Film. En 2006 estrena su ópera prima, Bucarest 12:08 , que obtuvo la Cámara de Oro en la Quincena de Realizadores de Cannes. Después vendrían films como Policía, adjetivo (premio del jurado 'Un certain regard' en Cannes 2009) o El tesoro (2015).

After graduating with the short A Trip to the City (which won a Cinéfondation Award at Cannes), he founded the production company 42Km Film with Marcela Ursu. He premiered his first feature 12:08 East of Bucharest in 2006, which garnered him the Caméra d'Or at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight. It was followed by films such as Police, Adjective (Jury Prize at Cannes' Un certain regard in 2009) and The Treasure (2015).
