Francisco y un grupo de albañiles trabajan construyendo una lujosa casa en la Ciudad de México. Tras la muerte de su hermano en la obra, Francisco se entera que su cuñada, ahora viuda, no recibirá indemnización alguna por parte del dueño de la casa. Sin embargo, en un golpe del destino el dueño de la lujosa casa también muere y Francisco decide ocupar la mansión y subarrendar sus habitaciones. Este acto de justicia tendrá, empero, consecuencias ulteriores ya que el cambio de lugar social implicará para Francisco otros cambios. Y es que Francisco, tras soportar una a una las injusticias de un sistema diseñado para reproducir la pobreza, decide hacer saltar por los aires los pactos que mantienen al sistema andando, sin que nada haga sospechar que el sistema es resiliente porque suele reproducir sus propias condiciones de subsistencia.

Con un único actor profesional, esta ópera prima de David Zonana no teme internarse en las intrincadas relaciones entre el dinero, el poder y la corrupción, presentes en nuestras sociedades y en cómo una utopía puede terminar reflejando las mismas taras sociales que busca combatir. A menudo se ha comparado a Mano de obra con la célebre ganadora del Oscar, Parasite , del coreano Bon Joon-ho y razones no le faltan, lo que no hace sino avalar la tesis del film sobre un sistema económico que es global y produce monstruos.


Francisco and a group of construction workers are building a luxurious house in Mexico City. Following the on-site death of his brother, Francisco learns that his now widowed sister-in-law will not receive any compensation from the owner of the house. However, in a twist of fate, the owner of the luxurious house also dies and Francisco decides to become a squatter in the mansion and sublet its rooms. This act of justice will, however, have later consequences as the change in social standing will bring about other changes for Francisco. After enduring injustice after injustice from a system designed to perpetuate poverty, Francisco decides to block the machine that keeps the wheels of the system turning without suspecting the system is resilient because it usually reproduces its own survival conditions.

With only one professional actor, this debut by David Zonana is not afraid to dive deep into the complex relationships between money, power and corruption that exist in our society and how utopia can end up mirroring the same social defects it seeks to fight against. Mano de obra has often been compared to the famous Oscar winner, Parasite , by Korean Bon Joon-ho,—and with good reason—which does nothing but confirm the film's thesis on an economic system that is global and creates monsters.

Sus cortometrajes Princesa (2014), Sangre alba (2016) y Hermano (2017) fueron estrenados en diversos festivales tanto en México como a nivel internacional. Mano de obra es su primer largometraje.

He has worked as producer for Lucía Films projects such as 600 Miles (Gabriel Ripstein, 2015), Chronic (Michel Franco, 2015) and April's Daughters (Michel Franco, 2017). His short films Princesa (2014), Sangre alba (2016) and Hermano (2017) premiered at various festivals both in Mexico and around the world. Mano de obra is his first feature.
