¿Es posible viajar dos veces al mismo recuerdo? El cineasta Oskar Alegria construye una cabaña de madera en una orilla aislada del río cerca de la isla donde jugaba en su infancia, hoy anegada por la construcción de una presa que ha dejado la tierra invisible. Los árboles de la isla permanecen sin embargo todavía en pie, como mástiles de un juguete roto en medio del agua. El aire entre los troncos será el único espacio posible para revivir el pasado. Zumiriki es un naufragio en la memoria, una experiencia de cuatro meses aislado en una cabaña de madera en el bosque de la infancia, con la sola compañía de dos gallinas, un pequeño huerto y un reloj detenido para siempre a las 11 y 36 y 23 segundos.

Oskar Alegria, quien visitó este festival en su 31ª edición para presentar su reconocida ópera prima La casa Emak Bakia , estrenó Zumiriki en la sección Orizzonti del Festival de Cine de Venecia, donde fue recibida con una gran ovación. Y no es para menos, puesto que Alegria nos sumerge en el día a día de un singular asceta (él mismo), a través de un delicioso poema cinematográfico. Ante la mirada fascinada del espectador, se despliega la nueva rutina de un hombre que aprovecha su aislamiento voluntario para leer, pasear, escribir, observar, filmar y realizar un riguroso y delicado trabajo de arqueología emocional. Zumiriki es, en definitiva—tomando las palabras del cineasta Alan Berliner—, "una fiesta para el alma, una antropología del tiempo, una obra maestra".

Is it possible to travel twice to the same memory? Filmmaker Oskar Alegria builds a cabin on an isolated riverbank near the island where he played as a child. This island has now disappeared under the water after the construction of a dam that has rendered the land invisible. Only the trees of the island where he once played still stand, like the masts of a broken toy in the middle of the water. The air between the trunks is the only space left to relive the past. Zumiriki is a shipwreck in memory, a 4-month-long experience of isolation in a wooden cabin in the childhood forest, with only two hens for company, a small vegetable garden and a clock that stopped dead at 11 hours, 36 minutes and 23 seconds.

Oskar Alegria, who visited the 31st edition of our festival to present his renowned debut The Search for Emak Bakia, premiered Zumiriki in the Orizzonti section of the Venice Film Festival where it received a standing ovation. And with good reason, as Alegria takes us deep into the everyday life of his unique hermit (himself) through a delightful cinematic poem. Before the fascinated eyes of the viewer, a new routine unfolds, that of a man that takes advantage of his voluntary isolation to read, roam, write, observe, film and undergo strict and detailed emotional archaeology work. Zumiriki is, ultimately,—in the words of filmmaker Alan Berliner—"a party for the soul, an anthropology of time, a masterpiece."

He was the Punto de Vista International Film Festival art director from 2013 to 2016 in Pamplona, Navarra. His first film The Search for Emak Bakia (which narrates the search for the house in the Basque coast where Man Ray shot Emak Bakia ) was part of 70 festivals, including BAFICI, Edinburgh, Telluride, San Sebastián, San Francisco, Yamagata, Shanghai and DocLisboa, and won 17 awards.
