Patience Portefeux is an Arabic interpreter who works for the Ministry of Justice transcribing phone tappings in the Paris anti-narcotics unit. The job is precarious and paid under the table. One day, Patience does a favor for the son of a friend and becomes involved in a drug deal, ending up with a pile of cannabis in her possession. Driven by need, the woman takes things one step further and starts balancing her work in the anti-narcotics unit with her new job as a dealer.

The film is based on the novel of the same name written by criminal lawyer Hannelore Cayre and inspired by real cases from her own experience. La daronne skillfully combines the crime and humor genres in a film that beats to Isabelle Huppert's own rhythm, in one of her most entertaining roles. Moving easily through all kinds of surreal situations and as comfortable playing a cautious interpreter as she is in the role of a manipulative criminal, the actress reminds us that comedy is a genre that, at times, suits her just as well as drama.
