Dos mujeres que han compartido toda una vida juntas se ven enfrentadas a la enfermedad de una de ellas. La mujer enferma decide no hacerse ningún tratamiento y toman la resolución de mudarse a una pequeña casa en el bosque hasta que llegue el día de su muerte. Es así como volverán a reencontrar el amor que con el tiempo fue sepultado por la rutina. Poco a poco fortalecerán su relación mientras fuera de la cabaña la muerte acecha.

Pese a su argumento sustancialmente trágico, el guión de Vendrá la muerte y tendrá tus ojos se sitúa en las antípodas del dramatismo exacerbado. Esta melancólica elegía fue compuesta esquivando cualquier manipulación emocional y golpes de efecto oportunistas. El cineasta compagina dos líneas: los recuerdos e imágenes del pasado que vuelven a la vida en la relación entre las protagonistas, y un final, medio soñado, medio vivido, en el que son acompañadas por los grandes nombres de la literatura que escribieron los mejores versos sobre tragedias como la suya (el propio título es tomado de unos versos del poeta y novelista italiano Cesare Pavese). Al igual que Pavese o Alejandra Pizarnik (otra autora referenciada en el film), José Luis Torres Leiva rubrica un poema cinematográfico sobre la degradación de un cuerpo enfermo, el miedo a morir y la sorprendente capacidad del ser humano por recobrar la esperanza –en este caso, la capacidad de enamorarse– en una situación límite como la espera de la muerte.

Two women who have shared a whole life together find themselves facing the illness of one of them. The sick woman decides against going through any treatment and they agree to move to a small cottage in the woods to wait for the day she dies. Thus, the love they had for each other, once buried under routine, is rekindled. Little by little, their relationship will grow stronger, while outside the cottage, death is lurking.

Despite its substantially tragic plot, the script for Vendrá la muerte y tendrá tus ojos is on the opposite end of over-the-top drama. This melancholic elegy was created by avoiding any type of emotional manipulation and opportunistic blows. The filmmaker combines two timelines: the memories and images from the past that come back to life in the relationship between the protagonists and a half-real, half-dream-like ending where they are joined by the great names of literature who wrote the best verses on tragedies such as theirs (the title itself comes from a line from Italian poet and novelist Cesare Pavese). Just like Pavese or Alejandra Pizarnik (another author mentioned in the film), José Luis Torres Leiva writes a cinematic poem on the deterioration of a sick body, fear of death and the amazing ability of humans to regain hope—in this case, the ability to fall in love—in such an extreme situation as is the case of waiting for death to come.
