The next day, over 200,000 people held a demonstration and signed a petition calling for her return and the end of censorship. But who is this famous Mexican journalist? How did she become a symbol of resistance and freedom of expression in Mexico? Who are her main enemies? Why is she still alive when dozens of her colleagues have been murdered in recent years?

The latest documentary from the director of Muchachas (2015), captures the prolonged and dangerous struggle of Carmen Aristegui to reopen her station in favor of freedom of speech. The

journalist represents, for the millions of people who support her, the only alternative voice to the official narrative. If it were a different country, this might be an easier task, but in Mexico, where the socio-economic system is dominated by drug trafficking and political corruption, Carmen and her team have an uphill battle on their hands. Without ever showing the horror, Juliana Fanjul makes us imagine the worst without depriving her heroine of the kindness and sense of humor that make her so special. The off-camera voice of the director—whose words, pitiless but terribly real, are chosen with great care—gives the film a bittersweet flavor, as poetic as it is blunt.

Estudió comunicación social en la Universidad Iberoamericana de México. También se graduó del Departamento de Documental en la Escuela Internacional de Cine y Televisión San Antonio de los Baños. Trabajó como asistente de dirección. En 2015 estrenó su primer largometraje documental, Muchachas. Cuba calling (2014), Hilda e Helena (2013) y Si seguimos vivos (2010) son otros de sus títulos.

She studied Social Communication at the Universidad Iberoamericana in Mexico. She also graduated from the Documentary Department of the International Cinema and TV School of San Antonio de los Baños. She worked as an assistant director. In 2015, she premiered her first documentary feature, Muchachas. Cuba Calling (2014), Hilda e Helena (2013) and Si seguimos vivos (2010) are some of her other films.
