Siblings Eydis and Kari are only five and six years old when their parents' marriage falls apart. As their mother struggles to find her footing following the divorce, she temporarily sends them to a countryside children's home. But the stay turns out to be longer than they expected and both siblings will be forced to take matters into their own hands.

The directorial debut of documentary maker Guđrun Ragnarsdóttir is an evocative film about longing for affection and stability during childhood. But also about survival instinct in a hostile environment. When Eydis and Kari have been at the group home for just a few days, they pity the children who have to endure the same relentless routine all year round. However, when their stay is extended, they themselves are immersed in that same indifference. The striking cinematography by Ásgrímur Guðbjartsson transforms the beautiful stony Icelandic landscapes into an emotional prison for the tenants of the home. Ragnarsdóttir keeps the camera low at all times, so our perspective matches that of a child living amidst natural surroundings as beautiful as they are inhospitable, cared for by unfriendly staff that sometimes acquires supernatural overtones. And even though hope decreases as the weeks go by without news from their parents, the film acquires an optimistic and comforting outlook filled with empathy and promise.
